Hello all, did you hear about the book Fireworks written by
and illustrated by ? You did! Good because it came out on May 13, 2025. You didn’t? No worries because today I’ll talk about it and show you some of my favorite spreads from it. :)First off, you know what I thought was interesting about this book? It didn’t have a book jacket. That’s no problem, but it did surprise me haha. But you know what it did have? A vertical gatefold spread!
IT’S SO GORGEOUS!
If you are new to both Matthew Burgess and Càtia Chien, you are in for a treat with this book! Matthew is a poet of words and Càtia one of pictures. Their pairing for this picture book is absolute magic. I mean, check out this spread!
And this is not their first book collaboration. In fall 2020, their book The Bear and the Moon (another beauty) was published.
In Fireworks, we get to live a steamy summer day with two siblings as they enjoy finding ways to cool off until the night brings a pyrotechnic spectacle over their city. If you enjoy peak summer and peak childhood summer moments, you’ll definitely want to grab yourself a copy of Fireworks!
Now for the Picture Book Look, I was excited to highlight such beautiful colors like that vibrant pink and deep blue on the cover. I wore a dark periwinkle top from MNG and a pink pleated skirt from I’m not sure where (I got it at a clothing swap) along with my tan strappy heeled sandals.
And I painted my nails a light blue with glitter color and wore some blue and gold earrings that shape-wise reminded me of fireworks themselves.

And that’s that! Thanks for reading along. I hope you’ve enjoyed sneaking a peek at a must-have book and my outfit inspired by it.
As always, you can grab your copy of Fireworks at Warwick’s or Bookshop.org.
